Cardiothoracic Specialist Joins Medical Staff at Sharon Regional Medical Center

October 24, 2016, (Sharon, PA) - Sharon Regional Medical Center announced that cardiothoracic surgeon Edward Lawson Woods, M.D. has joined the medical staff of Sharon Regional Medical Center. Dr. Woods specializes in surgical treatments of the heart, lungs and other organs in the chest.

Heart attacks are the leading cause of death in the United States, with 600,000 people dying annually of heart disease. More than five million Americans visit hospitals each year with chest pain. In late 2015, Sharon Regional Medical Center received full Chest Pain Center with PCI Accreditation from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC). Chest pain centers better monitor patients when it is not clear whether or not a patient is having a coronary event, and can quickly provide necessary diagnosis and treatment, such as surgical intervention. This accreditation recognized Sharon Regional’s commitment to the highest standards in the country for heart attack care for Mercer County and the surrounding area.

Dr. Woods, a retired Commander in the United States Navy, has more than three decades of experience in cardiothoracic medicine. Throughout his military career, Dr. Woods completed appointments in multiple military medical facilities including; head of the Cardiothoracic Surgery division at the Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland, and Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda.

Dr. Woods completed his internship and residency at The Naval Hospital in Bethesda, where he also served as chief medical resident in General Surgery. He completed a residency and served as chief resident of Cardiothoracic Surgery at The Naval Hospital in Bethesda. Dr. Woods received his medical degree at the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO and is board certified from the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

Concurrently, Dr. Woods serves as a consultant in Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC and for the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. Additionally, he serves as a clinical associate in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, OH and staff surgeon at the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Geisinger Health System in Danville, PA.
